Scores of users of Gmail, Google, Google Pay, Chrome and Hangouts across the globe experienced random crashing of the popular apps on their Android phones last week. As people scrambled for solutions, Google claimed to have fixed the glitch caused by the Android WebView app. Android users faced the crashing issue following a buggy update to the Android System WebView app a day after Google rolled it out.
- The Workspace Status Dashboard of Google announced that the company was aware of the problem “with Gmail affecting a significant subset of users”.
- To allow users fix the glitch, Google laid out a series of steps in order to update both Google Chrome and Android System WebView via Google Play. The steps include navigating to the Play Store app, then search for Android System WebView, and select the “Update” option. Repeat the steps for Google Chrome.
- In a note on the Workspace Status Dashboard, Google said: “The problem with Gmail has been resolved. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience and continued support. Please rest assured that system reliability is a top priority at Google, and we are making continuous improvements to make our systems better.”
- Although the above troubleshooting steps are a temporary fix, Samsung Support US also advocated the same. “If you are experiencing issues w/apps unintentionally closing/crashing due to the recent Android System WebView update, please open Google Play Store & update the WebView and Chrome apps to the latest version…,” the company tweeted.
